Welcome to Sweden Hills, Japan

This little piece of Sweden outside of Sweden is located on the island of Hokkaido, which can be found approximately 30 minutes from the city of Sapporo, Japan. Here, everything is very similar to Sweden. The houses are red with white corners and they celebrate midsummer and throw crayfish parties. One could almost believe one had come to a real Swedish village. They even learned the language,.

So, how come this little village in a far away corner of the world (from a Swedish point of view) adopted the Swedish way of life? It was a visit from a Swedish ambassador that sparked the idea. While visiting the place he said it was very similar to Sweden in terms of climate and landscape. And as they say – the rest is history.

And one might wonder… Is Sweden Hills perhaps more Swedish than any ‘real’ Swedish village? Judge for yourselves.
